In America it seems as if everything is losing value. We see it in the economy, housing, and other investments. But even greater than this we have seen the value of marriages, relationships, women, men, sex, and love hit rock bottom. The cause of the social infrastructure collapse is in words. The value of what we say has diminished to almost nothing. Talk is cheap, anyone can write a blog, talk trash, make and break promises. “Innovations in communications” has not helped the word economy. It has moved from where commitments were made orally and people remained true to their word. Then words were used in written contracts, and bound by one’s name. Yet a name does not mean anything to anyone today, so people still break contracts. It used to be if you had something to say you had to say it face to face. Now we disassociate our words from ourselves because we no longer have to speak them. We can now type ambiguous phrases over the internet which must be interpreted by the receiver.
We have moved from a place where people possessed rich vocabulary to a word economy where people no longer have much of a use for words anymore. No one hardly ever tries to expand their vocabulary, it is no longer seen as a need. We have the attitude; it doesn’t matter what I have to say nothing is going to really change no matter how much we say“Yes We Can.” History is no longer valued in our society so what does it matter what I say today, no one is going to remember tomorrow and if they do, hardly does anyone ever hold us to it. We can say whatever we what to whom ever we want without any consequence. It the American way--the first amendment.
Words are constantly being stretched to take on new meanings for the day. The words of the Constitution are even slowly being changed to fit the agenda of politicians on The Hill. The Bible at one time was viewed as inherent for 1900 years there was no question to the errancy of the Bible. Today we view the Bible as infallible. See the subtle change?
A man’s word used to mean something, a man’s signature used to be binding, words were used in making covenant, now they just cause broken promises and lies. You see the intention for words I feel was not only to communicate but to make covenant, the first covenant from God came as a Word to Moses. Yet just because God gave Moses the covenant and the Torah. we must realize the covenant of the Word of God was made before the world was created. If words were designed for the purpose for covenant making then why do you think it hurts so much when people do no live up to their word? When they use their words to cause pain instead of joy?
We must begin to accept the truth behind the design of words. As a human we live in both the physical and spiritual world where what is done in one world will effect the other. The truth of something does not change just because we redefine it. We can define our lives as meaningless, useless, or hopeless, when the truth is starkly different. Just because we have begun to devalue words does not mean the design and truth behind words has changed. If words truly meant nothing it would never hurt when someone broke a promise. Oaths wouldn’t matter, relationships wouldn’t be binding, love would become meaningless. We have seen these effects in our marriages, relationships and sex life. When we begin to live in a world that is less than what it was designed for, we are no longer living in reality, and we miss out on what God has truly designed for us to experience. Ultimately we will end up missing out on The Truth.
